People into Employment PIE - Emma's Success Story

A Sunderland woman has turned her dream of running her own business into a reality – thanks to People into Employment!
Emma Kirtley, 25, left school at 16 with few qualifications but with the help of People into Employment (PIE) is now running her own business. She first became involved with PIE, which aims to help carers, ex-carers and people with a disability into further training and employment, in 2006. After completing the Learning for Living course, which was aimed at carers, Emma got the education bug and enrolled for more courses. Emma improved her literacy and numeracy via Learndirect at ETEC before completing a diploma in Body Massage and Reflexology at City of Sunderland College in 2008. Training in Indian Head Massage, aromatherapy and hot stone therapy followed before Emma joined the Association of Beauty Therapists. PIE also offered advice and guidance on employment and training opportunities.
Now Emma runs her own beauty therapy business – Extreme Beauty – in Blandford Street, Sunderland, offering a wide range of alternative treatments including massages, reflexology and facials.
Emma said: “Getting involved with PIE and all of the other agencies has boosted my confidence.
“There was no way I would have thought about running my own business – or even going to college – if it hadn’t been for their support.”
Liz Dabrowski, PIE Development Worker, said: “PIE, Shaw Trust, SES and Working Links all worked together to ensure Emma had the best start possible in business.”
PIE is part of Sunderland-based charity ETEC Development Trust.
Support offered by the project is tailored to suit individual needs and can include training, vocational experience, voluntary work and employment.

Independent Safeguarding Authority Vetting and Barring Scheme Free Event
Crowtree Leisure Centre Friday 11th December (for time contact Volunteer Centre))
For those of you who are unsure or unaware of the implications the new Vetting and Barring Scheme will have on your organisation, staff and volunteers, this is the FREE event for you.
The new Vetting and Barring Scheme is one of the Government’s key responses to the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman by Ian Huntley, which focused public attention on the way that the Government vet people who work with children. The resulting Bichard Inquiry recommended a new scheme under which everyone working with children or vulnerable adults should be checked and registered.
Anyone wanting to work or volunteer with children or vulnerable adults will be required to register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) by law. Employers will also be legally bound to check and confirm that the person they have engaged in ‘regulated’ activity is registered and has therefore been checked.
The flyer and booking form for the event, please complete the booking form and return it no later than 12 noon on Wednesday 9 December 2009. Should you be unable to attend the event but would like a question answered, can you please forward it to me by the same date. Should we receive a high number of questions, we will ask them strictly in the order of receipt.
Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment and should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Sharon Charlton on 0191 5678902 or email Sunderlandvol@aol.com |

Be Part Of something Wonderful!!

Living in a community that’s stronger, safer, more together is something we all wish for but feel powerless to do anything about! Well now you can!
Young people have a major influence on the way our communities are now and how they will be in the future. That’s why Sunderland City Council are running a major Community Transformation Programme that focuses on enabling young people, particularly those that currently feel disaffected and alienated, to radically change their attitudes and beliefs and the way they see and live their lives and become valuable members of their community.
Volunteers who they have trained to act as Performance Coaches have played a vital role in the success of the programme. Performance Coaches supplement the work of their professional trainers and to support the young people as they go through an intense and challenging process of change.
So far from being powerless you have the opportunity to be a real force for change by volunteering to become a Performance Coach and playing a fundamental role in making a real difference to the lives of young people and the well being of your community.
To find out more about the programme, what being a Performance Coach entails and other opportunities to get involved please contact:

Military Mental Health - Veterans Awareness Workshop...
Sunderland 09:30 – 16:00
November 26th 2009
December 9th 2009
LUNCH INCLUDED
“From Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Northern Ireland to normality...
WHAT NOW? Who do I turn to, who can I Trust?”
Often people can become confused about these young men and women who put their lives on the line in service of their country the term VETERAN leads many to conjure up images of Chelsea Pensioners etc. However did you know that a Veteran of the armed forces can be 18 years of age or older? Currently there are around 5 million veterans across the UK. What else is there that we don’t know about this vulnerable section of society?
Who am I? My name is Gary Cameron (NLP Master Practitioner) and I served in the armed forces in such places as Northern Ireland Edinburgh Canada, Cyprus and British Forces Germany. During the late 90’s I experienced difficulties with transition to civilian life and began experiencing symptoms of Anger Management. I didn’t know where to turn and hadn’t been given very much information about this on my discharge from the forces. Furthermore I didn’t believe that a civilian therapist could possibly help since they didn’t have forces experience (the perception of many ex-forces). My experiences inspired me to set a personal goal...
“To contribute towards improving the mental health provision for Veterans by raising awareness of their unique needs amongst third sector and public sector health and social care providers”
So I decided to train professionally gain the experience within services and then I developed the VETERANS AWARENESS WORKSHOP. The workshop will make a great addition to the tool box of any health/social care professional or indeed anyone who works in any care sector at any level. During the workshop delegates will discuss:
• Veteran benefits and entitlements
• Military to Civilian Transition
• Anger issues as they relate to Veterans
• PTSD and Combat Related Psychological Trauma
• Military Ethos and Culture
• Veterans Perceptions
• Individual Experiences of Veterans (Veterans talking of their own experiences)
and Much More.... Click Here for more details
