Victim Support - Safe and Sound Project
In July 2009 Victim Support was successful in a bid to the Home Office, for funding to create the Safe and Sound Project. The Project was in conjunction with partner agencies including, Northumbria Police, Sunderland City Council Safer Communities Team, Gentoo, Supporting People, Sunderland Volunteer Centre and Safe Partnership, all of whom were to play a vital role in delivery. The Project was to benefit the residents of the City of Sunderland. The nature of our organisation allowed us to obtain funding of £96,000, via the Safer Homes Fund.
The aim of the project was to target areas of highest crime and those at greatest risk of victimisation, by securing 500 premises adjacent to recent burglary targets and also to enhance the security of the homes of vulnerable people in an effort to make feel them more secure in their own homes. Furthermore, security advice and crime prevention information was to be provided to 2000 targeted households surrounding the above properties.
The project is due to end at the end of March 2010. We have only received referrals to date for 168 properties and are now therefore promoting the service with other agencies who may come into contact with vulnerable people who may benefit from the Scheme. I am aware this may not be possible for you to do but I was wondering if it would be possible for you to bring it up at the next east area forum meeting? i am happy to attend to discuss the project if this will help.
