Should you have any queries please contact Liz directly via e-mail liz@ruahine.co.uk or telephone on 07766 118890

Volunteer looking for a placement - We have been approached by a young lady aged 21 who is looking to carry out some volunteering over the summer holidays. She has expressed an interest in a role that would be linked into caring of some sort, children, elderly etc. However she realises she wouldn't have time to carry out a CRB check in time (although she has one dated May of this year) for those who need one. Therefore I wondered if anyone can suggest any roles she could help out with until September?

Sunderland Carers Centre LogoCaring with Confidence Event - From August 2008 to April 2009, Sunderland was one of the trail sites for ‘Caring with Confidence’, a national programme which aims to help carers make a positive difference to their life and the person they care for. The programme is part of the Government’s ‘New Deal for Carers’ an initiative aimed at improving support for carers.
Eighty carers took part in the Caring with Confidence trail sessions and the feedback from the majority of carers was very positive. Sunderland Carers’ Centre is delighted to offer these sessions again until spring 2011. Experiences of carers who have already taken part show that the sessions will...

• Help carers build on their existing strengths
• Provide opportunities to share experiences and learn from others in similar situations
• Give useful information , ideas and tips about looking after someone
• Help carers decide if there is anything they may want to change about their caring role
• Gives carers the opportunity to make new friends
• Open the door to new opportunities

The next sessions in Sunderland will start again in September 2009 at ‘The Place’, Athenaeum Place, Sunderland SR1 1QX. This is a fantastic new venue and a great setting for the sessions. Light refreshments are available at all the sessions. Transport and alternative care costs are provided for carers who need this.
If carers are interested in taking part, two introduction sessions called ‘Finding Your Way’ will take place on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th September from 10am to 1pm. (These sessions are identical so carers would only need to attend one). The session looks at what matters to carers and decide which of the other six sessions they might want to do. Our experience is that most carers who take part in ‘Finding your way’ also want to take part in most of the other sessions. The other sessions are detailed in the attached leaflet.

If carers want to book a place or would like more information about Caring with Confidence sessions they should contact Sunderland Carers’ Centre on 0191 5673232 or e-mail reception@sunderlandcarers.co.uk. If carers want to take part but the above dates, times and venue are not suitable other sessions will be available from January and April 2010 in different areas of the city. If carers express an interest now they will be contacted when these sessions become available.
